Business Continuation Services

The need for business continuation planning is driven by the unthinkable. How your organization embraces and budgets for the unthinkable will determine whether or not your business survives in the aftermath of a disaster.

Without proper planning to prevent and recover from a disaster, your business will most likely fail after a major disaster. Tape backups are good for recovering an accidentally deleted file but what if the tape drive the tape fits in isn’t there anymore? How about the software that wrote to the tape? Backing up is an important part of data integrity and recovery but they are only a small part of a comprehensive recovery plan.

One plan does not fit all either. The type of business you are in determines type and content of your business recovery plan. Business processes for running a law office are quite different then those of a restaurant.

Just what is a disaster recovery plan?

Disasters come in many different forms. They range in from simply recovering an accidentally deleted file or email to the complexities of setting up your entire operation at another location. Each needs to be planned for but in quite different contexts.

There are three primary parts to a basic disaster recovery plan:

First part of a recovery plan is to have a thorough understanding of the procedures and operations that your business runs on and the supporting tools that are used in those operations.

Second part of a recovery plan is to define the sequencing and time lines for these operations to be recovered.

Third part - making sure you know who is in charge of executing the plan.

These three concepts - knowing what is needed, knowing when it is needed and knowing who is doing it - are the basics of a minimal disaster recovery plan. Simply put, before you can put your accounting data backup to use, you need to have the accounting software loaded and configured.

Why do you need a disaster recovery plan?

Disaster recovery planning is nothing more than self insuring your businesses survival. You probably carry some form of liability insurance or even personal life insurance as hedges against the unthinkable so grasping the concept of disaster planning as a form of business insurance should not be a stretch of the imagination.
